white double blossom phlox from my mother's house she grew up in. Ages ago we went to the new owners and asked to dig up some of my grandmother's plants. These phlox made it back to Madison. There are a few remaining after the voles and powdery mildew took their toll.
A hop cone from bines of the magnum variety. Only female rhizomes produce such cones. The smell of citrus and bitter has complemented beers since the Dark Ages (1500s) when hops began to replace spices. The antiseptic qualities preserved beer and prevented lactobacillus from spreading or souring beer. This hop is a perennial that comes up every year. It's a small piece of plant that was removed years ago after it began overwhelming everything else in the garden boxes.
